Worker Safety for I-10/Picardy Interchange Is Goal of New Partnership
OSHA Teams Up with James Construction Group and Louisiana Department of Labor

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Providing better health and safety for construction workers in Baton Rouge is the goal of a new partnership among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), James Construction Group LLC and the Louisiana Department of Labor.

OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with groups, including trade associations, labor organizations, and employers. OSHA's area office in Baton Rouge is working on the formation of this partnership.

"The Labor Department is committed to protecting the well being of construction workers," said OSHA Regional Administrator John Miles. "This partnership goes a long way towards meeting that goal."

James Construction Group LLC, located at 11200 Industriplex Blvd. in Baton Rouge, is the general contractor of the I-10/Picardy Interchange Project, scheduled for completion in 2006. The company employs about 2,000 workers in the southern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida¾about 65 are working on the project.

The Louisiana Department of Labor, which has frequently been involved with OSHA's outreach programs in Baton Rouge, will be helping small contractors develop a comprehensive health and safety program and will assist with training programs.

The objective of the agreement is to encourage participation by the subcontractors of the highway project and assure that participates have effective safety and health programs. It will foster training, in both English and Spanish, to help workers recognize and eliminate safety hazards.

"The partnership will address hazards associated with construction as well as those unique to highway work zones," said Greg Honaker, area director of OSHA's Baton Rouge area office.

Employers and employees with questions about this or other OSHA partnerships may call the Baton Rouge area office at (225) 298-5458 or visit the OSHA Web site at www.osha.gov.

Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed more than 300 partnerships, impacting over 13,000 employers and 573,000 employees across the United States. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
