U.S. Cultural Ambassador Mary Wilson Visits Mozambique

During her visit to Mozambique June 8-9, 2004, U.S. Cultural Ambassador Mary Wilson shared her message about HIV/AIDS directly with more than 2,000 Mozambicans. In addition, she was featured twice on Mozambican television, and Radio Mozambique promoted the U.S. embassy’s offer of free tickets to her concert to anyone who visited a voluntary counseling and testing center; About 150 people visited a center and claimed the free tickets.  

Reaching Out to Students
Mozambican school children listen intently as Mary Wilson speaks to themMary entertained approximately 400 students at the Forco do Povo elementary school and Francisco Manyanga high school. She passed on the message that when it comes to having sex and particularly unprotected sex, students should "Stop, in the name of love". She also encouraged students to visit voluntary counseling and testing centers.

Concerts
Ms. Wilson held a small event for high-level contacts (audience of 50) and a larger show at Mozambique’s national theater (audience of 1,300). At both events, Mary spoke about the importance of visiting voluntary HIV/AIDS counseling and testing centers.

Mary had the opportunity to hear local musicians and share her music with them. She also reminded them that they are considered role models in society and should use this status to help people help themselves by learning more about HIV/AIDS and visiting voluntary counseling and testing centers.
