The Embassy of the United States of America in Doha is pleased to announce that after being nominated by President George W. Bush, Ambassador Joseph Evan LeBaron has been sworn in as the new U.S. Ambassador to the State of Qatar.

A career diplomat, LeBaron began his diplomatic career in Doha in 1980. From 2003 to 2006, he was the U.S. Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. He also has served as the U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission in Manama, and as U.S. Consul General in Dubai.

LeBaron holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University. LeBaron, a fluent Arabic speaker, also has studied at the American University of Beirut and the University of Khartoum.

Ambassador LeBaron was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 4th and was sworn in on July 18, 2008 at a ceremony in Portland, Oregon.
