    Developed for the Bikes Belong Coalition by the Bicycle Federation of America, this 1999 guidebook provides advocacy tools and tactics for making communities more bicycle-friendly.

    This 1998 "best practices" report developed for the FHWA by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals showcases bicycle and pedestrian plans and facilities that have been recognized for excellence.

    The FHWA's Bicycle Safety Education Resource Center provides access to a wealth of bicyclist education materials designed for specific age groups. Databases are searchable by age and by topics and subtopics, such as riding skills, road and traffic knowledge/skills, equipment, etc.

  • Bicyclist's Safety Principles [HTML, PDF 181KB]

    Oregon's clear, well written manual helps bicyclists and parents of younger bicyclists understand how to ride safely and legally, and can easily be adapted for use in other States and localities.

  • Kids Riding Bikes Injury Prevention Tips

    "Kids Riding Bikes" is one of a series of information sheets originally developed by NHTSA to be given out in hospital emergency departments to injured patients to help them prevent a recurrence of their injuries.  The information sheets are equally useful, however, to be used by school nurses, police officers, doctors, firefighters, handed out at health fairs, neighborhood days, child safety set checks, bike rodeos, and school health classes.

  • Safety Riding Tips and Rules of the Road

    Concise, on-line tips from the City of Portland's Office of Transportation on bicycling safely in the city that could be adapted elsewhere for information sheets or Web content.

  • Share the Road: Pennsylvania Bicycle Driver's Manual [PDF, 381 KB]

    This manual, prepared by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, teaches safe bicycling on public roads and streets. The target audience is licensed drivers over the age of 16. Portions of this well written and illustrated publication were adapted from a Rodale Press Publication, Street Smarts: Bicyclist's Traffic Survival Guide, with information from Bicycling Magazine.

    This bicycle safety brochure was published jointly by DOT's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

  • Tips for Motorists Sharing the Road with Cyclists and Pedestrians

    New York State's Department of Transportation Web site has frequently-asked questions about bicycle and pedestrian traffic laws that could be adapted for use in bicyclist education programs in other States and localities.

BICYCLE SAFETY PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION RESOURCES

  • FHWA's University-Level Bicycle and Pedestrian Course

    Intended for use in graduate or undergraduate-level transportation planning and design curricula, this course provides current information on pedestrian and bicycle planning and design techniques, and practical lessons on how to increase bicycling and walking through land-use practices and engineering design.
