SUBJECT: FDA Position on the extra-label use of Fluoroquinolones

This memoranda rescinds the information presented in the original M-a-92.
The FDA intends to address the extra-label use of fluoroquinolone drugs in
a future educational activity directed toward veterinarains and milk
producers.

If fluoroquinolone drugs are observed being used in an extra-label manner
with labeling that complies with the provisions of Item 16r(i) of the
Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, the observation should not be debited at this
time.

If fluoroquinolone drugs are observed being used in an extra-label manner
without labeling that satisfies the requirements of Item 16r(i) of the PMO,
this would continue to be be a violation of that item.

Copies of this memorandum are provided for distribution to State Milk
Regulatory Agencies, State Veterinary Boards/Associations, State Milk
Sanitation Rating Officers and FDA and Regional Milk Specialists. This
memorandum is also available on the FDA Prime Connection computer
bulletin board system and should be made readily available to the dairy
industry and any other interested parties.
