Agency's Safety Initiative on Falls And Electrocutions In Nebraska LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns has proclaimed June "Focus on Fall and Electrocution Safety Month" in the state's construction industry, encouraging voluntary compliance by employers and employees with occupational safety and health standards. "Falls and electrocutions continue to plague the construction industry," said Ben Bare, director of OSHA's Omaha area office. "We thank Governor Johanns for his efforts to raise awareness about these serious problems and hope they will lead to fewer accidents." Falls and electrocutions from overhead power lines continue to be the leading causes of fatalities investigated by OSHA in the construction industry. Last year, more than one in four construction fatalities in Nebraska were the result of falls. Bare noted that OSHA has an ongoing "Problem Solving Initiative" within the Midwest region to prevent falls, scaffold accidents, and electrocutions from overhead power lines in construction. As part of this initiative the agency will conduct inspections of construction sites throughout the state to confirm employer compliance. OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health.
