Summary:

The curriculum provides oral health professionals (dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants) with information to ensure that young children with special health care needs have access to health-promotion and disease-prevention services that address their unique oral health needs in a comprehensive, family-centered, and community-based manner. Module titles are as follows: (1) An Overview of Children with Special Health Care Needs and Oral Health, (2) Providing Optimal Oral Health Care, (3) Oral Health Supervision, (4) Prevention of Oral Disease, and (5) Behavior Management.

The Web-based curriculum was prepared by the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center at Georgetown University and designed by the Center for Advanced Distance Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Curriculum content was adapted from the Planning Guide for Dental Professionals Serving Children with Special Health Care Needs, prepared by the University of Southern California, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Development of the planning guide and the CE course was supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to be:
1. Aware and responsive to the oral health unique requirements for young children with special health care needs.
2. Develop family-centered preventive programs for young children with special health care needs.
3. Proficient in managing oral health behaviors for young children with special health care needs.
