Summary:

Over recent years, the number of medically compromised patients entering Indian Health Service Dental Clinics has been increasing. Many of these have urgent treatment needs where a delay in dental care could pose a serious health threat. This short half-day presentation will cover risk assessment and ethical considerations when providing dental treatment for adult patients with a wide variety of medical issues including heart and circulatory diseases, liver diseases, respiratory diseases, renal diseases, pregnancy, bisphosphonate therapy, diabetes, bleeding disorders, organ transplantation, cancer, and thyroid diseases.

Course is available to dentists and dental hygienists only.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

1. Determine when consultation with the patient's primary care provider is indicated.
2. Understand risks associated with certain medical conditions and when further tests or evaluation are needed.
3. Understand different treatment options to consider for medically compromised patients.

This course is open to dentists and dental hygienists only.
