Dan Thompson


Dan Thompson has more than 18 years experience managing international affairs for the federal government. 

Prior to joining the NWS, Mr. Thompson was the Senior Program Manager for Cooperation with China in the Office of International Affairs of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  From April 2006 through August 2007, Mr. Thompson managed U.S. participation in the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation. 

From 1999 to 2003, Mr. Thompson was the Environment Advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development Regional Mission for Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova.  Prior to his posting in Kyiv, Mr. Thompson served for six months as the Acting Director of the Office of International Activities for EPA Region 5 in Chicago, and for more than eight years with EPA's Office of International Activities in Washington, DC, where he was the Program Manager for EPA activities in Hungary, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Turkey, and Ukraine.  He also managed EPA support for the establishment of new Regional Environmental Centers (REC) in Moldova, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine and was part of the five-member team that established the original REC in Central Europe in Budapest, Hungary.  Mr. Thompson managed EPA's participation in two Environment for Europe Ministerial Conferences in Sofia (1995) and Aarhus (1998) and represented the United States on the Task Force for the Environmental Action Program for Central and Eastern Europe. 

Before joining EPA in 1990, Mr. Thompson spent three years as Projects Director and Legislative Assistant for U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski. 

Mr. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Illinois (1984) in Champaign, IL, and a Masters Degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University (1986) in Washington, DC.
