New accessions are Federal records and other historical material, such as Presidential papers, recently added to the National Archives. Usually these materials are not available for research until they have been processed. This includes arranging and placing the materials in proper containers, describing the content of the materials in a finding aid, and reviewing the materials for any donor or general restrictions.
Openings describe those historical materials that have been processed or declassified and are now ready for researchers to use.

This series consists of motion picture films and video recordings relating to the nuclear facility at Fernald, OH, which was closed because of hazardous waste contamination of air and water nearby. The surrounding community of Cincinnati and its suburbs claimed nuclear waste had affected the health of plant workers and local residents. The resulting controversies lead to heavy news media coverage, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigations, and clean-up of the facilities. The records date from 1957 to 2007. During the quarter, the library accessioned 11,059 pages (5.585 cu. ft.) of recent manuscript acquisitions.
Notable archival acquisitions this quarter include an accretion to the Barbara Gellman Collection, containing notes and other research materials related to Professor Irwin Gellman's book, Secret Affairs: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Cordell Hull and Sumner Welles, donated by Professor Gellman; an additional donation of materials related to Frederick C. Schneider, Jr. and his service in the 240th Military Police Battalion stationed at Hyde Park during World War II to guard the President, donated by Helen M. Schneider; an audio CD and transcription of Eleanor Roosevelt's speech at the dedication of the new library at Georgia State Women's College in Valdosta, GA, March 27, 1941, donated by Michael M. Black; three original government documents related to the National Resources Planning Board in the 1940s discovered in the files of the State University of New York at Albany's Department of Economics, donated by SUNY-Albany; photocopies of correspondence from FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt to their son Elliott Roosevelt and Ruth Googins Roosevelt Eidson, 1928–52, donated by Chandler Roosevelt Lindsley; an accretion to the papers of Whitney Hart Shepardson, diplomat and member of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, donated by John W. Shepardson; and an original commemorative certificate signed by FDR and given to all sailors aboard the USS Quincy during the voyage to and from the Yalta Conference, donated by Mark and Laurie Howard.
During the quarter, 165 items were accessioned into the museum collection: 144 new acquisitions and 21 previously unaccessioned items in the museum collection. On January 1, Curtis Roosevelt officially deeded 110 objects related to his grandparents to the library. Nineteen are housed at the library, and the remaining 91 are on loan to the donor with the understanding they be brought to the library periodically. In addition, the museum received 34 other new acquisitions: 30 items relating to the service of Frank Koch in the U.S. Navy during World War II, donated by his daughter, Library Director Cynthia Koch; two Wedgwood lavender embossed queen's ware mugs, one featuring a cameo of FDR and the other a cameo of Winston Churchill, donated by the Mayborn Museum at Baylor University, Waco, TX; a political campaign poster, "Carry On With Franklin D. Roosevelt," by Pach Brothers, donated by Edith Spindel; and a framed engraving of Franklin D. Roosevelt once owned by FDR's White House secretary Grace Tully, donated by Felipe Propper.
The printed materials collections added 39 new books, 35 periodicals, and 137 vertical file items during the quarter. Also accessioned into the collection were 53 previously unaccessioned books that were identified during the FDR Book Collection project.
The library acquired from the American Heritage Center the Papers of Joseph E. Reeve, an economist with the Bureau of the Budget (2 linear feet, ca. 1948–71), consisting of memoranda, letters, speeches, routing slips, and printed materials relating to his government service. This collection is closed pending processing.
The library also acquired from AHC the Papers of John Blandford, an official with the Bureau of the Budget and the National Housing Agency (19 linear feet, ca. 1940–57), consisting of correspondence, notes, reports, diaries, appointment books, photographs, and other items relating to Blandford's career in government and his personal affairs. This collection is closed pending processing.
The library acquired the Papers of Irene Juno, a journalist (less than 1 linear foot, ca. 1945–62), consisting of a scrapbook of photographs, press clippings, invitations, and correspondence mostly relating to First Lady Bess W. Truman, and to Greta Kempton's portraits of the Trumans and their friends. This collection is closed pending processing.
The library acquired an accretion to the Papers of Paul H. Griffith, Assistant Secretary of Defense and National Commander of the American Legion (less than 1 linear foot, ca. 1940–75), consisting of correspondence, press clippings, memorabilia, and military personnel records pertaining to Griffith's life and career. This accretion is closed pending processing.
The library acquired the Papers of Lewis W. Rathgeber, an alternate delegate to the 1948 Democratic National Convention (1 linear foot, ca. 1936–63), consisting of press clippings and a few letters, photographs, and other items mostly relating to the convention and Pennsylvania politics. This collection is closed pending processing.
The library acquired the Papers of John K. Hulston, lawyer and chairman of the Greene County (Missouri) Democratic Central Committee (less than 1 linear foot, ca. 1907–96), mostly consisting of copies of legal documents relating to a lawsuit that involved Harry S. Truman and the ownership of land in Shannon County, MO. This collection is closed pending processing.
The library acquired copies of bills, amendments, and a resolution introduced by Senator Harry S. Truman, which are part of Record Group 46: Records of the United States Senate (less than 1 linear foot, ca. 1935–38). This material is closed pending processing.
The library acquired an accretion to the Records of the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award Foundation (1 linear foot, ca. 1950–80), consisting of correspondence, printed materials, and photographs relating to the foundation; its head, Henry Talge; and Talge's contacts with Mr. and Mrs. Truman. This accretion is closed pending processing.
New acquisitions for the quarter totaled 227 artifacts, including a collection of Illustrated Current News newspapers documenting events of World War II in 1944 from John Pendergrass collection; a Mother's flag with six stars from Wichita, KS; from Earl Eisenhower, six items from his father's estate consisting of awards and DDE campaign items; from Lois Tortorelli, a collection of nine campaign items; and from the Abilene Public Library, a gold key awarded to Addie Over, an Abilene School teacher that taught in Abilene when Ike was in school.
During the quarter, 32,023 pages were added to the library holdings, including the papers of Helen Geis Westland, 1942–64; and the additional papers of Robert Cutler, 1909–67, and Frederic E. Fox, 1948–69.

A total of 123 photograph items, 27.75 hours of audio (audiocassettes, open-reel audio tapes, 1 LP), and 78 hours of moving images (DVD discs, 3/4" U-Matic videocassettes, VHS videocassettes, Beta-SP videocassette, and 1/2" open-reel video tapes) were accessioned and described.
On March 5, 2008, the library opened and made available for research Presidential Recordings Tape 97, which totaled 198 minutes. The tape included meetings on Railroad Work Rules Dispute, Guatemala, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and the EEC-Common Market; the meetings dated from 7/10/63 to 7/12/63.

The Audiovisual Department accessioned one audiotape from the President's Committee on Consumer Interests, two color prints from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, one DVD from Mrs. Dick Cavett, and 0.10 cubic feet of material from technical services ongoing documentation of LBJ Library events.
During this quarter, the Nixon Library added video oral histories with Nixon domestic policy aide Christopher DeMuth, early Nixon congressional challenger Stephen Zetterberg, photojournalist David Hume Kennerly, diplomat and sub-cabinet official Robert Ellsworth, Elliott Richardson associate Jonathan Moore, domestic policy adviser Bradley Patterson, advance man and Forest Service director Ron Walker, journalist Lou Cannon, Senator Robert J. Dole, White House Special Investigative Unit member and counsel to the Committee to Re-Elect the President G. Gordon Liddy, staff secretary Jon Huntsman, Sr., Watergate burglar Eugenio Rolando Martinez, and speechwriter William Safire.
The archives department in Yorba Linda recently received a donation from L. M. Koran relating to the U.S. Public Health Service during the Nixon administration.
During this quarter, the curatorial staff accepted items from Nettie Frias (Nixonette sash and Nixonette membership card); from Pamela Brigandi (Reagan souvenir coffee mug); from Olivia Anastasiadis (2007 Bush White House Christmas card); Dale Jenkins (a 1972 canvas backed poster "Nixon: Now More than Ever"), and Bob Babcock (1969 plastic party cup from the Cotton Point Estate/Casa Pacifica in San Clemente).
The library acquired the papers of Nicholas H. Ludlow, editor and an executive director for the National Council for U.S.-China Trade (1974–82, 4 cubic feet) The collection consists of studies, reports, maps, charts, briefing material, publications, and other material that Mr. Ludlow used in the course of his work.
The library completed work for 15 accessions this quarter, including accretions to the papers of Betty Ford, Susan Ford Bales, Melvin Laird, Frank A. Ursomarso, and Roy Wetzel (audiovisual materials). The library also received additions to the Composite Oral History Accessions and the Composite General Accessions collections.
Recent donations to the museum included a pair of Gerald Ford commemorative eyeglasses, two 1976 Whistlestop Tour "conductor" hats, and other 1976 Presidential campaign memorabilia; an Office of Budget and Management Presidential seal from the Ford Presidency; two 1970s House of Representatives ashtrays; a 1930 Herpolsheimer South High School football trophy; a South High School 30-30 Club blanket; and, a signed Paul Collins print. Also received were Betty Ford's George Mann Spirit of Community Award; several Betty Ford hats and a trunk she took to camp as a young girl; a portrait painting of Betty Bloomer from her early days as a model (ca. 1929); and, more than 200 handmade Christmas ornaments sent to the White House during the Ford administration.
The Library continues to receive material from President Carter's Office and from John Gunther Dean. The library accessioned the Heather Campion Files (2 cubic feet), the Adam Clymer Files (5 cubic feet), and the files of G. William Miller (40 cubic feet).
The Bush Library accessioned approximately seven linear feet of textual material this quarter. Collections receiving accretions include: 1) The George Bush Post-Presidential Papers; 2) Mrs. Bush's scrapbooks, 3) The Allen Griffin Collection, and 4) The Chase Untermeyer Papers. In addition, 12 linear feet of Bush Presidential Records were transferred from Washington, DC, to the Bush Library.
The Audiovisual Department accessioned 570 photographs taken during recent special events at the Bush Presidential Conference Center; 164 post-Presidential photographs from the Office of George Bush; and 10 cubic feet of 1991 Gulf War photographs, slides, and negatives from the Air Force History Office.
During the quarter, the Clinton Library received approximately 3.25 linear feet of textual material. One was unsolicited, and one was for Clinton courtesy storage, which totaled approximately three cubic foot. The unsolicited collection consisted of printed materials including a volume entitled The President's Programs in the USA, and the courtesy storage material consisted of various George Fisher books.
The Truman Library opened 1,807 pages of previously donor-restricted materials from the Papers of Greta Kempton, portrait painter who painted the official portraits of President and Mrs. Truman. The library also opened the Papers of Helen Wallace, first cousin of Bess Truman. These papers consist of about 400 pages of copies of letters, photographs, and other materials.
Reviewing was completed on the following collections, which were opened for research this quarter: the Addie Over scrapbook and the NATO and Family Correspondence Series of the Alfred Gruenther papers.
Processed three additions to the Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection, 5 items, 25 pages, 0.075 feet.
Processed two additions to the Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Collection, including the papers of Philip and Nancy Dare (Malaysia) and the papers of Leita Kaldi (Senegal). 0.75 feet.
The library staff opened five oral histories, totaling 212 pages. They are the oral histories of Woodrow Bean, Ewing Hass, Janet Wofford Ingram, Guy S. Meloy, and Hubert H. Humphrey III.
The library opened for research on a review by request basis the Melvin Laird Audiovisual Materials, 1941–2002, consisting of photographs, audiotapes, videotapes, films, and negative copies of microfilm transferred from the Melvin Laird Papers and documenting Laird's tenure as U.S. Representative (1953–68), Secretary of Defense (1969–73), Counsellor to the President (1973–74) and senior counselor at Reader's Digest (1974–present).
The library opened for research digital images from the audiovisual Composite General Accessions of the Betty Ford Center, George H.W. Bush Library, Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, the U.S. House of Representatives Photo Office and DVDs of library book talks by David Hume Kennerly and Tom DeFrank, copied by Michigan Productions.
The library opened eight series from White House Files and two donated collections. They include:
- Carter Family Papers—Governor's Press Office Files, 14 cubic feet.
- Anne Wexler's Office—Jane Hartley Subject Files, 16 cubic feet.
- Office of Cabinet Secretary—Pauline Schneider Files, 23 cubic feet.
- 1976 Campaign Files—Field Office, Margaret McKenna's Files, 2 cubic feet.
