Harrison Ford Films Public Service Announcement for Coalition Against Wildlife Trafficking

Bureau of Oceans, Environment and Science
June 5, 2008

On November 27, 2007, renowned actor Harrison Ford took several hours out of his busy schedule to film a Public Service Announcement for the U.S.-led Coalition Against Wildlife Trafficking to encourage people to stop buying illegally traded wildlife products. The illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife products is fueled by the unchecked demand for exotic pets, rare foods, trophies, and traditional medicines, particularly in China and the United States. This $10 billion black market rivals drug and arms trafficking in size and is driving many species, including tigers and elephants, to the brink of extinction. To combat this illegal trade, the Department of State, working with other governments and conservations organizations, formed the Coalition to reduce demand for these products through education and improve enforcement through regional cooperation and training.
