Introduction

The NLM Gateway is a Web-based system that lets users search simultaneously in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). It allows users of NLM services to initiate searches from one Web interface, providing "one-stop searching" for many of NLM's information resources or databases. It is being developed by the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

One target audience for the Gateway is the Internet user who is new to NLM's online resources and does not know what information is available there or how best to search for it. This audience may include physicians and other health care providers, researchers, librarians, students, and increasingly, patients, their families, and the public. Other users may find the Gateway useful for an overall search of NLM's information resources. Some searchers may locate what they need immediately, while others will utilize the Gateway as an adjunct tool to other NLM search services such as PubMed® and MedlinePlus®.

System and Data Coverage

The Gateway connects users with multiple NLM retrieval systems and also provides a search interface for meeting abstracts. Please note, other NLM systems (e.g., PubMed, NLM Catalog, MedlinePlus) will retain their own search interfaces and will continue to be publicly available.

The Gateway will provide access to the information found in an increasing number of NLM retrieval systems in several phases. Currently, users are able to access information from the collections in the table below. The Meeting Abstracts collection is found only in the Gateway.

MEDLINE (web site; MEDLINE fact sheet; PubMed fact sheet)
(Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic database that contains over 16 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. PubMed provides free access to MEDLINE, and includes additional citations such as in-process citations and OLDMEDLINE citations that have not yet been converted to MEDLINE status.

The NLM Catalog (web site; overview)
is an alternative search interface to NLM bibliographic records for journals, books, audiovisuals, computer software, electronic resources, and other materials that is available to users under the NCBI Entrez system.

Bookshelf (web site; overview)
is a growing collection of full text biomedical books, as well as additional resources such as GeneReviews and Health Services/Technology Assessment Text (HSTAT).

TOXLINE® (web site; fact sheet)
is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) bibliographic database for toxicology, a varied science encompassing many disciplines. TOXLINE records provide bibliographic information covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals. TOXLINE Subset complements TOXLINE Core (part of MEDLINE) with references from an assortment of specialized journals and other sources.

DART (web site; fact sheet)
is a bibliographic database covering teratology and other aspects of developmental and reproductive toxicology.

Meeting Abstracts (overview)
is the National Library of Medicine's online collection of abstracts from HIV/AIDS, Health Services Research, and Space Life Sciences meetings.

MedlinePlus (web site; fact sheet)
is the National Library of Medicine's web site for consumer health information. MedlinePlus includes:

• health topics with links to health information from NIH and other authoritative sources and also include a MEDLINE/PubMed® search, current news items about the topic, and links to related topics. Health topics include interactive health tutorials that use animated graphics and sound to explain conditions and procedures in easy-to-read language.
• information for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, plus herbs. and supplements
• a medical encyclopedia containing an extensive collection of medical images as well as 4,000 articles about diseases, tests, symptoms, injuries and surgeries.
• current health news with late-breaking stories about medicine and health.
• other resources including organizations providing health information, consumer health libraries providing services to local residents, resources beyond MedlinePlus covering special topics and collections, and directories of doctors, dentists and hospitals.

ClinicalTrials.gov (web site; fact sheet)
provides patients, family members, health care professionals, and members of the public easy access to information on clinical trials for a wide range of diseases and conditions.

DIRLINE (web site; fact sheet)
(Directory of Information Resources Online) is the National Library of Medicine's online database containing location and descriptive information about a wide variety of information resources including organizations, research resources, projects, and databases concerned with health and biomedicine.

Genetics Home Reference (web site; fact sheet)
is the National Library of Medicine's Web site for consumer information about genetic conditions and the genes or chromosomes responsible for those conditions.

Household Products Database (web site; fact sheet)
Household Products Database is a consumer's guide that provides information on the potential health effects of chemicals contained in more than 7,000 common household products used inside and around the home.

HSRProj (web site; fact sheet)
is a database providing access to ongoing grants and contracts in health services research. It contains descriptions of research in progress funded by federal and private grants and contracts for use by policy makers, managers, clinicians and other decision makers.

OMIM (web site; overview)
(Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man) is a continuously updated catalog of human genes and genetic disorders.

HSDB (web site; fact sheet)
is a toxicology data file focused on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas.

IRIS (web site; fact sheet)
(Integrated Risk Information System) is a toxicology data file containing data in support of human health risk assessment.

ITER (web site; fact sheet)
(International Toxicity Estimates for Risk) is a toxicology data file containing data in support of human health risk assessments.

GENE-TOX (web site; fact sheet)
is a toxicology data file containing genetic toxicology (mutagenicity) test data, resulting from expert peer review of the open scientific literature, on over 3,000 chemicals.

CCRIS (web site; fact sheet)
(Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System) is a toxicology data file containing over 9,000 chemical records with carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, tumor promotion, and tumor inhibition test results.

Profiles in Science (web site; fact sheet)
provides access to the archival collections of leaders in biomedical research and public health.
