Assessing Assistive Technology Needs

Assistive Technology should be tailored to the individual. The use of AT is a personal experience; it is based on the person’s needs and preferences as well as the environment/s in which the device will be used. Depending on need, several areas should be looked at including: communication, mobility, environmental modifications, seating, positioning, software and hardware options, training and maintenance of the device. The assessment should be functional. Questions to consider include:

What is the need or purpose of such a device?

Does the device perform its function appropriately within the environment it will be used, i.e. work?

Will it solve the need?

Can the person use the device?

Are they comfortable with it?

Do they know how to use it?

Have they received the proper training?

AT needs change and should be revisited to make sure that the device is still the best solution to the need and also that the individual’s needs and preferences have not changed.
