Christening set for ship named in honor of diver

SAN DIEGO: General Dynamics NASSCO will launch the latest in the Navy's line of cargo supply ships Thursday at the company's shipyard at Harbor Drive and 28th Street.

The Carl Brashear will be christened at 10 a.m. in a public ceremony. The ship is named for a master chief petty officer who was the first African-American to serve as an active-duty Navy master diver. Brashear's story was told in the 2000 movie “Men of Honor.”
