DSN: CC36.SNATAL86
CC36.SNATAL87
ABSTRACT
Subsets of the NCHS Natality Data have been created for use by
CDC staff. These subsets contain a few of the key variables
from the data file as indicated below. These datasets are
catalogued tape files on the CDC-Atlanta mainframe named
CC36.SNATALXX , where XX represents the year of interest.
These data files are subsets of the Detail Natality data from NCHS. These
subsets include the following variables from the detail natality files:
Resident Status
State of Residence
County of Residence
City of Residence
SMSA
Sex of Child
Race of Father
Race of Mother
Race of Child
Age of Mother
Number of Children Born Alive, Now Living
Number of Children Born Alive, Now Dead
Number of Children Born Dead
Age of Father
Birth Weight
Plurality
Birth Data, Month
Birth Data, Day
Gestation in Weeks
Mother's Education
Father's Education
Legitimacy
Month Pregnancy Prenatal Care Began
Mother's Place of Birth
Record Weight
Origin of Mother
Origin of Father
Number of Prenatal Visits
State of Occurrence
No. of Other Terminations Before 20 Weeks
No. of Other Terminations After 20 Weeks
The Natality data include all births occurring within the U.S.
The data are obtained from certificates filed for births occurring in
each State. Data were obtained from a 50-percent sample of certificates
from 1969-1971. Starting in 1972 all records were included for States
that participated in the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program (VSCP).
The number of States participating in the VSCP increased from 4 in 1972
to 46 in 1984; beginning in 1985, all States and the District of
Columbia participated.

NOTES
1) NCHS geographic codes used with 1970-1981 data are stored in
OS disk file - CC36.GEOCOD70 on the CDC-Atlanta mainframe. FIPS codes
not available on the Vital Statistics files prior to 1982.
2) NCHS geographic codes used with 1982-87 data are stored in
SAS disk file - CC36.NCHSFIPS.XWALK on the CDC-Atlanta mainframe.
This data file has FIPS codes linked with NCHS Vital Statistics
codes. The documentation for this file is included in the
documentation for the detail natality data.
3) Geographic classification for 1962-69 is based on the 1960 census
enumeration. Geographic classification for 1970-81 is based on the
1970 census enumeration. Geographic classification for 1982-87 is
based on the 1980 census enumeration.
