ABSTRACT
1990 ASSISTIVE DEVICES PUBLIC USE DATA TAPE
NATIONAL HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY
NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTH STATISTICS
Introduction
Each year, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) conducts
the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The NHIS is a personal
interview household survey which uses a nationwide sample of the
civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States. It
includes a "core" set of questions which remain virtually unchanged
from year to year on a variety of socio-demographic and health-
related items and one or more special health topics which vary
annually.
Among the 1990 NHIS special health topics were questions about the
use of all kinds of assistive devices. Individual questions were
included about the following types of devices: a) a brace of any
kind; b) any special equipment for getting around, such as crutches,
a cane, a walker or a wheelchair; c) any special equipment for
hearing problems such as a hearing aid, a special telephone, or
other special equipment for hearing problems; d) any special
equipment for vision problems, such as a white cane; e) an
artificial leg, foot, arm, or hand; f) a communications aid for
speech problems; and g) a typewriter or computer specially adapted
for disabled persons. Also included was a general probe question to
elicit reporting of all other types of assistive devices not
previously mentioned.
Additional information obtained about the reported devices describe
where and how often they are used, sources of payment and the health
conditions or impairments necessitating their use.
Other information obtained on assistive devices included:
*need for assistive devices, kinds of devices needed and
reasons for not having them (locations 397-414);
*special features in the home designed for disabled persons
and sources of payment (locations 416-464); and
*specially equipped cars or vans (location 415).
The 1990 Assistive Devices (AD) Public Use Tape contains data from
these questions as well as socio-demographic and many of the health
items obtained from the NHIS Core questionnaire.
Every person interviewed on the 1990 NHIS Core questionnaire was
eligible for the Assistive Device (AD) questionnaire (119,631
persons). Of these persons, a completed AD questionnaire was
obtained for 117,042 persons. The overall response rate for the
NHIS AD questionnaire was 93.4 percent. This response rate was
calculated as follows:
Household response rate from Core (95.5 percent) multiplied by
the AD person response rate (97.8 percent) = 93.4 percent.
Construction of the 1990 Assistive Devices Data Tape
Data from the 1990 Assistive Devices Questionnaire have been
organized into a single file. This file consists of:
*The NHIS person record from the Core questionnaire
(locations 1-189);
*Weight fields (locations 190-195);
*The special topic data (locations 336-1193).
A record exists for every person with a completed AD questionnaire
(117,042 persons). In location 336, persons reporting one or more
assistive devices are coded 1; persons without devices are coded 2
and persons for whom an AD questionnaire was completed but contained
insufficient information to determine whether or not a device was
used are coded 3.
Among persons with devices (6,310 persons), the number of devices
reported for any individual ranged from one to nine. The actual
number is coded in locations 337-338. Codes to identify the type(s)
of device(s) reported can be found in locations 340-396 as well as
in the two-digit locations that immediately precede where details of
those devices appear.
Details about the individual devices are ordered sequentially.
Device 1 is coded in location 465-466 followed by details about that
device in locations 467-545. Device 2 (if a second device was
reported) is coded in location 546-547, followed by details relating
to it in locations 548-626, and so forth.
Weights
The National Health Interview Survey uses a multistage sample
designed to represent the civilian, noninstitutionalized population
of the United States. Therefore, weights must be used to make
accurate estimates based on data from the NHIS. Two weights are
included on the 1990 AD file.
The Final Basic Weight (location 190-195) is the weight that will be
used in analyses of the AD data. The Interim Basic Weight (before
age-sex-race adjustment), required by some software packages for
variance estimation for surveys with complex sample designs, is also
included on the AD file (locations 172-177).
Guidelines for citation of NCHS Public Use Data
With the goal of mutual benefit, NCHS requests that recipients of
data tapes cooperate in certain actions related to their use.
Any published material derived from the data should acknowledge the
National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) as the original source.
The suggested citation, "Source: National Center for Health
Statistics, National Health Interview Survey of Assistive Devices,
1990," should appear at the bottom of all tables. When cited in a
bibliography, the suggested citation should read:

Documentation, National Health Interview Survey of Assistive
Devices, 1990 (machine readable data file and documentation).

It should also include a disclaimer that credits any analyses,
interpretations, or conclusions reached to the author (recipient of
the data tape) and not to NCHS, which is responsible only for the
initial data. Consumers who wish to publish a technical description
of the data should make a reasonable effort to insure that the
description is not inconsistent with that published by NCHS.
