Goshe Recognized for Outstanding Postdoctoral Achievement
Dr. Michael B. Goshe
Dr. Michael B. Goshe has been selected as the 2001 recipient of the M. T. Thomas Award for Outstanding Postdoctoral Achievement.
He was selected specifically for his landmark discovery known as the phosphoprotein isotope-coded affinity tag (PhIAT) methodology, which enables researchers to rapidly isolate and characterize essentially any protein modified with a phosphate group. Such phosphorylated proteins are important signals of transduction events in cellular systems and, therefore, are crucial for understanding how cellular systems function. By combining the PhIAT technology with the proven sensitivity of high-throughput mass spectrometry techniques developed at EMSL, this new method has expanded the frontiers of the proteomics field and further highlighted the roles of EMSL and PNNL in that area.
Dr. Goshe's discovery has led to several publications that have been cited frequently by other researchers in their papers and to a patent application. In addition, the PhIAT methodology has been an instrumental part of several grants that have been funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and by DOE in the Low Dose and Low Dose Rate Ionizing Radiation section.
Dr. Goshe has been a member of the EMSL Macromolecular Structure and Dynamics (MS&D) section since June 2000 when he began a postdoctoral research appointment in the laboratory of Dr. Richard D. Smith. He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Walsh University in 1992, and in 1999, he received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University. During his postdoctoral appointment, he has worked with Dr. Smith and with Dr. Tim Veenstra, who currently is affiliated with the NCI-Frederick Cancer Center.
The 2001 M.T. Thomas Award will be presented to Dr. Goshe at a ceremony on June 19, 2002. He will give a presentation of his work at that time, and a reception in his honor will be held after the presentation. An announcement of the presentation and reception will be made when the plans are finalized.
