Congressional Appropriation

Superfund Basic Research Program

A significant change occurred in 2000 when Congress chose to provide Program funds directly to NIEHS. Previously, the SBRP received its funds as pass through dollars from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). From 2000-2005 funding for the SBRP was through the House Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agencies Appropriation Subcommittee. In 2005, both the House and Senate restructured their appropriation subcommittees. In this reorganization, the SBRP was assigned to the Appropriation Subcommittees on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.

As part of the budget process NIEHS, annually submits a Congressional Justification to be included in the President's budget. The NIEHS Fiscal Year 2008 Superfund Congressional Justification for the NIEHS Superfund Programs can be viewed on the NIEHS FY 2008 Superfund Congressional Justification web page.

Subsequent to the release of the President's budget, NIEHS submits its Congressional Testimony to the appropriate appropriation subcommittee. The testimony updates the Congress on the status of the SBRP and highlights a few recent accomplishments. This year's Congressional Testimony can be viewed on the FY 2008 NIEHS Director's Statement for Superfund Programs web page.
