PHMSA Offers Advice on the Safe Use of Mobile Acetylene. On Sept. 6, 2007, after recent fires in Texas involving mobile trailers carrying acetylene gas, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued an advisory to ensure the safe transportation of the gas. Acetylene is highly flammable and requires special packaging and handling to be transported safely. The advisory urges shippers and carriers of mobile acetylene trailers and facilities that receive deliveries of acetylene to evaluate their current operations, review the adequacy of federal regulations and national consensus standards, and make adjustments in procedures and practices where necessary.
