PHMSA Offers Advice on the Safe Use of Mobile Acetylene. On Sept. 6, 2007, after
recent fires in Texas involving mobile trailers carrying acetylene gas, the
Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued an advisory to
ensure the safe transportation of the gas. Acetylene is highly flammable and
requires special packaging and handling to be transported safely. The advisory
urges shippers and carriers of mobile acetylene trailers and facilities that
receive deliveries of acetylene to evaluate their current operations, review the
adequacy of federal regulations and national consensus standards, and make

BTS Releases Airline Performance Measures for 2006. The U.S. Department of
Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a part of the Research and
Innovative Technology Administration, has released 11 airline industry
performance measures for 2006.
The 11 measures compare the performance of seven network and seven low-cost
carriers from 2001 to 2006 in the categories of financial, employment and
traffic, and operating expense. The report can be found on the BTS website at
