Above average temperatures this month were noted across much of southwestern Asia, eastern Europe and much of central North America. The warmest areas included parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and western India where the combination of warm and dry conditions led to extreme drought. According to U.N. sources, Afghanistan was experiencing their worst drought in 30 years. "Preliminary results of a crop assessment survey show crops in the north failed almost completely." the U.N. said. Surveys suggest that "between now and June 2001 at least half of the population of Afghanistan may be affected by drought, three to four million severely and another eight to 12 million moderately". In Ethiopia, estimates are that 8 million people were affected by drought, primarily in the southern and southeastern portions of the country. Drought was also affecting parts of the central and southeast United States. In contrast, many land areas in the Southern Hemisphere were relatively cool and wet in May. Additional details and global regional information are available in other sections of this report.
