U.S. Transportation Secretary to Recognize Local Police Officers for Heroism

On Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 2:00 p.m., U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta, joined by Federal Railroad Administrator Allan Rutter and other officials, will present the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Award for Heroism to two local police officers who risked their lives to protect the public from a potentially dangerous situation involving a hand grenade.

On June 9, 2003, officers confronted a robbery suspect in Union Station who pulled the pin on the grenade.  Notwithstanding potentially imminent danger to self, the officers apprehended the suspect, gripped the grenade’s “spoon” to prevent the device from detonating, and removed it from the crowded station until a bomb squad could determine that the grenade was inactive.

The Secretary will make remarks and present the officers with medals and certificates.
