U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $2 Million for Houma-Terrebonne Airport

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced a grant of $2 million to rehabilitate a runway at Houma-Terrebone, LA, Airport.

"President Bush and I remain dedicated to building a safe, secure and reliable transportation system that operates efficiently, strengthens the economy and improves our quality of life," Secretary Mineta said.   "Safety is the Bush administration's top transportation priority, and protecting and improving our transportation infrastructure is of central importance to all Americans.  This investment will help Houma-Terrebonne Airport maintain the highest levels of safety in the years ahead."

"These grants are critically important to our ongoing efforts to improve and modernize airports all across Louisiana," said Rep. Billy Tauzin, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  "With these funds, we will create needed new jobs and update our state's transportation system so that it can run more efficiently and effectively in the future.  Ultimately, saving time is a big cost savings for Louisiana consumers and businesses."

The funding will be used to preserve the airport's infrastructure by reconstructing a runway, thereby enabling it to be used well into the future.

The grant comes from the Airport Improvement Program of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration.
