Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $6.9 Million for John Wayne Airport
U.S.
Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced a grant of $6.9
million to enhance safety at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA.
The
funding will enable the airport to construct an aircraft rescue and
fire-fighting building, as well as rehabilitate a runway.
"President
Bush and I remain dedicated to building a safe, secure and reliable
transportation system that operates efficiently, strengthens the economy and
improves our quality of life," Secretary Mineta said.
"Safety is the Bush administration's top transportation priority,
and protecting and improving our transportation infrastructure is of central
importance to all Americans. This
grant will help John Wayne Airport maintain the highest levels of safety in the
years ahead."
"This
grant will help keep John Wayne Airport the state-of-the-art facility that it
already is," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.
"John Wayne Airport's safety and efficiency and dependability --
which are already second to none -- will be further enhanced. I am proud to have
John Wayne Airport in my congressional district, and I will work to maintain
John Wayne Airport's status as one of our nation's finest."
"Maintaining
John Wayne Airport's existing runways is important for safety and for passenger
comfort," said Rep. Christopher Cox. "The
federal investment in state-of-the-art fire-fighting at John Wayne Airport is an
important contribution both to aviation safety and homeland security.
This grant will allow us to accomplish all of these objectives."
The
grant comes from the Airport Improvement Program of the U.S. Department of
Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration.
