U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $8.7 Million for Lexington Blue Grass Airport

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced a grant of $8.7 million to enhance safety at Lexington, KY, Blue Grass Airport.

"President Bush and I remain dedicated to building a safe, secure and reliable transportation system that operates efficiently, strengthens the economy and improves our quality of life," Secretary Mineta said.   "Safety is the Bush administration's top transportation priority, and protecting and improving our transportation infrastructure is of central importance to all Americans.  This grant will help Blue Grass Airport maintain the highest levels of safety in the years ahead."

The grant will fund the first phase of improvements to two runways, a project needed to bring the airport into compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) runway safety area design standards.  This phase will include relocation of two roads and partial construction of improvements to a runway safety area.

The grant comes from the Airport Improvement Program of the FAA, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
