U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces
$10.1 Million in Grants to Expand Capacity, Enhance Safety
At New Mexico Airports
 

            Federal grants totaling $10.1 million will help to expand capacity and enhance safety at airports throughout New Mexico, U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta announced today.  

            “These grants will help New Mexico’s airports maintain the highest standards of safety while they expand their capacity to prepare for future increases in air traffic,” Secretary Mineta said. 

            Twenty-two airports will receive money for several projects, including rehabilitation and extension of runways, taxiways and aprons, installation of guidance systems, and acquisition of equipment and land.  The funds come from the Airport Improvement Program of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration. 

            In addition to individual airport grants, the state of New Mexico received $110,200 to prepare airport master plan studies for airports in Hatch, Las Vegas, Los Alamos and Springer. 

            Airports receiving grants are: 

            Alexander Municipal Airport, Belen -- $192,685 to acquire a pavement vacuum sweeper, install a runway guidance system and install
                    perimeter fencing.
            Angel Fire Airport -- $103,802 to install weather reporting equipment and navigation aids, and acquire land.
            Artesia Municipal Airport -- $302,000 to rehabilitate a runway and taxiway, and install perimeter fencing.
            Clayton Municipal Airpark -- $560,000 to construct the final portion of a new taxiway.
            Clovis Municipal Airport -- $453,150 to rehabilitate an apron.
            Conchas State Park Airport, Conchas Dam -- $637,640 to widen a runway.
            Deming Municipal Airport -- $635,550 to construct a new taxiway.
            Dona Ana County Airport at Santa Teresa -- $252,000 to conduct an environmental assessment for the project to widen, strengthen
                    and lengthen a runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
            Fort Sumner Regional Airport -- $313,882 to install a guidance system and perimeter fencing.
            Four Corners Regional Airport, Farmington -- $1.4 million to construct a taxiway, expand the snow removal equipment building, remodel
                    the aircraft rescue and fire fighting station, acquire a rotating beacon, acquire new computers for the vehicle gate and flight
                    information display system, provide lighting for runway windcones, acquire a truck with a hydraulic snowplow, and help reduce
                    noise impacts on surrounding communities.
            Harding County Airport, Mosquero -- $40,000 to conduct an environmental study to determine if the selected site is suitable for
                    construction of a new airport.
            Las Cruces International Airport -- $76,500 to acquire a replacement vacuum sweeper.
            Los Alamos Airport -- $204,000 to rehabilitate the apron surface, expand the south aircraft parking apron and construct a service road.
            Las Vegas Municipal Airport -- $900,225 to rehabilitate a runway, widen a taxiway, and install a guidance system.
            Moriaty Airport -- $47,500 to fund an environmental assessment of land that is  proposed to be acquired for a new runway.
            Raton Municipal Airport/Crews Field -- $450,000 to extend a taxiway.
            Roswell Industrial Air Center -- $1 million to improve the perimeter road to prevent potential vehicle and pedestrian incursions on
                    runways and taxiways.
            Santa Fe Municipal Airport -- $1 million to rehabilitate a runway and construct a taxiway.
            Sierra Blanca Regional Airport, Ruidoso -- $286,250 to acquire aircraft rescue and fire fighting equipment, install vertical guidance
                    equipment, and install apron security lighting in the hanger area.
            Taos Regional Airport -- $443,650 to seal and remark apron pavements, a runway and all taxiways, as well as widen ramp access
                    taxiways.
            Truth or Consequences Municipal Airport -- $570,950 to construct a taxiway and extend a separate taxiway.
            Tucumcari Municipal Airport -- $150,000 to rehabilitate an apron.
