U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces $6 Million Grant
For Terminal Expansion, New Taxiways
At Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced a $6 million grant to expand the terminal and build new taxiways at Sarasota-Bradenton, FL, International Airport.

“As our economy continues to grow, more and more Americans are taking to the skies,” Secretary Mineta said. “This investment will position the airport to manage the return to air travel we are now seeing.”

The grant will fund expansions and modifications to the terminal to improve the efficiency of passenger screening. It also will provide funding to construct taxiways that will provide additional access to Runway 4/22 and to areas planned for development. The grant also will be used to improve airfield drainage.

Woodie Woodward, associate administrator for airports at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), presented the grant on behalf of the Bush Administration.

“With the growing economy, we’re seeing record air traffic levels nationwide,” Woodward said. “Today’s investment will allow Sarasota-Bradenton to keep pace with the growing demand and soar with the economy.”

The grant comes from the Airport Improvement Program managed by the FAA.
