U.S. Transportation Secretary Mineta Announces Grant to University of Wisconsin for Transportation Research

MILWAUKEE -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta today announced a grant of $870,200 to the University of Wisconsin to operate a university-based center of excellence in transportation.

“The American economy depends on transportation,” Secretary Mineta stated. “This grant is a solid investment toward the people, technology and regional cooperation necessary to keep us on the go, and for the long haul.”

This grant supports the Midwest Regional University Transportation Center (MRUTC), managed by the University of Wisconsin. Seven universities participate in the MRUTC: University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette University (Milwaukee), Lac Court Oreilles Ojibwa Community College (Hayward, WI), University of Cincinnati, Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), and Richard J. Daley College (Chicago).

MRUTC is one of 33 University Transportation Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to conduct combined programs of research, education, and technology transfer. More than 80 schools throughout the United States participate in University Transportation Centers.   Since the program’s inception in 1998, UTCs have involved more than 3,500 university students and faculty in the study of transportation, and produced more than 1,200 research reports.

Recipients of UTC grants are required to provide matching funds.

UTC grants are administered by DOT’s Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA), which works for the advancement of science and technology for national transportation needs. RSPA also has responsibilities for safe and secure movement of hazardous materials to industry and consumers by all modes of transportation, including pipelines, and coordination of rapid response to transportation emergencies.  Information on the UTC program is available on the Web at: http://utc.dot.gov/
