a Blast Creating Wetlands
As part of the NRCS Wetland Reserve Program, Rusty Knapp of Superior Blasting
pushes an ignite button and four joules of electricity ignite 300 pounds of
ammonium nitrate punching 88 dump truck loads of soil into the air.

Well Below Normal
The snowpack at Wallowa County’s two mountain SNOTEL sites was well below
average last Sunday, a condition that holds true for the entire State of Oregon.

Conservation District Helps Farmers Store Manure and Protect Water Quality
Several years ago, Waverly Farm didn’t have a place to store manure or the funds
to build a costly storage pit. Then the farm’s owners, Mike, Ken, and Paul
Stiles, received a letter from the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation
District offering a solution.

Chief
Knight Speaks at Annual National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD)
Meeting
Chief Bruce I. Knight spoke at the NACD 59th Annual Meeting this week
in Atlanta, Georgia. His presentation, “Charging into the Future,” focused on
new Departmental and NRCS leadership, accomplishments in implementing the 2002
Farm Bill, the future of conservation, and the power of partnerships.
February is National Black History Month
This
year's theme is “The Niagara Movement 100th Anniversary." The Niagara
Movement was a meeting held in July 1905, at Niagara Falls, New York, where
African-Americans, led by W.E.B. Dubois, called for full civil liberties and an
end to racial discrimination. The Niagara Movement was a forerunner to the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Your support
and commitment during Black History Month will help NRCS create a better
workplace for all employees.

Day, April 22, 2005

Earth Day events in their States. As this year is the 70th anniversary of NRCS,
the 20th anniversary of the Earth Team, and the

Alkali
Muhly To Be Released this Year
Sometimes called scratchgrass, Alkali muhly (Muhlenbergia asperifolia) will be
released this year by the NRCS Los Lunas, New Mexico, Plant Materials Center to
commercial producers and to others for field office evaluation plantings.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or marital or family status.
