Mapping Frequently Asked Questions

The Information Services Division (ISD) hosts a considerable amount of public data on our GIS website. However, we cannot always answer questions about the data itself. This FAQ is intended to provide helpful information and links to fulfill or redirect many of the requests asked of the ISD GIS staff.

Can you explain what the Bike designations mean?

A trail is parallel, but separated from the roadway where vehicle traffic travels. A lane is a parallel space in the roadway ROW, adjacent to the traffic lanes and marked with pavement markings-white lane lines, bike markings, usually also signed. A route is designated by signage, but bikes ride in, or share the traffic lane-usually on a lower class roadway such as collector or local.

Can I search for a particular Subdivision Name?

Yes. Using the Advanced Map Viewer, you can query for Subdivision name. In order to accomplish this, you will need to have the 'Parcel' layer active (this layer includes subdivision information) and use the 'Query' or Binocular tool. The Query will be case sensitive, and all AGIS data is entered in Upper Case letters.

Please refer to the site User Guide to learn more about the Advanced Map Viewer tools.

Can I Search for a particular Lot, Block and Subdivision (City Legal Description)?

Yes, using the the Query Tool, this is possible, but involves a few steps:

1. Go to http://www.cabq.gov/gis/ and click on the link to the "Street Map"

2. Make sure that 'Parcel is the active layer (the circle in front of the layer name should be selected).

3. Use the Query tool (the tool on the left-hand tool bar that has a red question mark in front of an icon of a data table). You will need to buid a complex query to narrow down the possibilities.

4. Pick "SUBDIVISION" from the dropdown "Field" menu. Choose the "=" Operator. For Value type in the exact name of the subdivision as it appears in the City Database. It must be exact and it must be in quotes. Then click on the "Add to Query String" button.

5. To narrow down your results, you can now add another query to your query string. First click the "And" button. From "Field" choose "BLOCK", Operator should be "=", and Value should be whatever the block number is. Click "Add to Query String" and then "Execute."

6. You should see a list of parcels that match your criteria at the bottom of the window. At the bottom of the table is a link to "Zoom to these records."

7. Once you click the Zoom to these records link you should see the subdivision block highlighted. Now you can turn on the "LOT NUMBERS" layer to find the specific parcel you are looking for. You can then turn on the "METRO ADDRESS" layer to find the parcel address.

8. To see the full address, make the "METRO ADDRESS" layer the active layer, click on the Identity tool (the white "I" in the black circle) and then click on the parcel. We do not have ZIP code information as parcel attributes, rather this can be determined from the Zipcode data layer, which appears in the 'Boundaries' folder of the layer list.

The Ownership Data you are showing on the website is incorrect. Will you update it?

The City of Albuquerque displays the County Assessor ownership information as a convenience, however we cannot legally make any changes to the Ownership database. These changes can only be made with the County Assessor directly, and will only be reflected on our website after we recieve a new data delivery (usually in May or June).

Why are the County Assessor Ownership lot lines different from the City Parcel Basemap lines?

The City Parcel Basemap reflects official platted subdivision information, and the County Assessor lot lines will show actual ownership boundaries. In most cases the 2 different systems will coincide, however, there are many cases where ownership of parcels, or parts of parcels may have changed without going through the official replat process. These changes will result in differences between the two mapping systems. The AGIS division which maintains the City Parcel Basemap is bound to map parcels as represented by official platted subdivision documents.
