Short Weather Summary |
|
There was plenty of rain in
December, with a train of storm systems from the southwest United
States. While it was raining in Arkansas, heavy snow and ice occurred in
areas north and west of the state. While it was not a white Christmas,
some snow did arrive a day later in the northwest half of the state. |
|
There were three record high temperatures
toward the beginning of December. Check
out the record below. |

An active Subtropical Jet (i.e. southern branch of the
jetstream) kept wet and mostly mild weather going in Arkansas in
December. The heaviest rain occurred from the 9th through the 13th as a
front stalled across the region. Most areas received one to two inches
of rain...and locally more.
|
In the picture: The Subtropical Jet has brought an active
weather pattern to the southern United States in December, 2007. Wind speeds (at
30,000 feet) in the graphic are in knots. |
At times, cold air penetrated into the region from the
north...which created large temperature differences from north to south.
On the 8th (across the aforementioned stalled front), high
temperatures ranged from 44 degrees at Mountain Home (Baxter County) to
79 degrees at El Dorado (Union County) and DeQueen (Sevier County). On
the 9th, maximum readings between 12 pm CST and 6 pm CST ranged from 35
degrees at Highfill (Benton County) to 79 degrees at El Dorado (Union
County) and Monticello (Drew County).
Not only did this keep the weather unsettled (rain), there was also a
lot of fog. The fog formed when warm air penetrated into colder
conditions farther north.
|
North and west of Arkansas, the story in December was wintry
precipitation. Snow and ice were common from the southern and central
Plains into the mid-Mississippi Valley, the upper Midwest, and the Great
Lakes region. This affected neighboring states such as Oklahoma, Kansas,
and Missouri. |

precipitation along and north of the front. |
|
While Winter was not far away, there was no snow on the
ground in Arkansas on the 25th. However, on the 26th...there was just
enough cold air aloft to support light snow from the Ouachita Mountains
into the Ozarks (northern and western sections of the state). |

Up to two inches of snow fell around Cherokee Village (Sharp County)

One to two inches of snow fell from Mena (Polk County)
and Mount Ida (Montgomery County) to Waldron (Scott County), Danville
(Yell County), Clinton (Van Buren County), Deer (Newton County),
Mountain View (Stone County) and Cherokee Village (Sharp County). There
was locally up to three inches of snow, with five inches at Mount
Magazine (Logan County). |
