The Port of New Orleans is one of the original designated ports established in the 1970s by the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service. It was established for the importation and exportation of wildlife and wildlife products into the United States. Approximately 1,000 commercial and non-commercial shipments a
year come through the Port of New Orleans, including alligator skins, alligator meat, alligator products, game trophies, live reptiles, eggs, feather products, shells and shell products. One of New Orleans
major holidays, Mardi Gras, brings in several million feathered masks. Business hours are from 8:00am to 4:30pm. By appointment, an inspector is available for weekend, holiday, and after hours inspections. A 48-hour inspection notice must be given on all live wildlife shipments.
