Penn State Football Letter: Nittany Lions crush Orange in Carrier Dome

Monday, September 15, 2008

All-Pro greats Floyd Little and Art Monk were in the Carrier Dome Saturday, as were many members of the 1959 national championship team, plus the spirits of the late great Ernie Davis and Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. They were represented by actors Rob Brown and Dennis Quaid who played their characters in a new movie about the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner, who tragically died of leukemia before he could ever play in the pros. The movie, titled "The Express," had a gala premiere in the historic Landmark Theatre in downtown Syracuse on Friday night. But all the ghosts of Syracuse football's storied past could not help the current Orange team that was thoroughly dominated by Penn State, 55-13, on the scoreboard, 560 to 159 yards on the stat sheet, and four to one in fans still in the Dome by game's end. Austin Jaffe
Monday, September 15, 2008

Across the nation, more stories are surfacing about people owing more money than their houses are worth. The real estate market is still in a turmoil and even people with good credit histories are having financial problems. How could this be? From the mid-1990s until 2006, housing prices increased dramatically in parts of the United States including Southern California, Florida, Phoenix and Las Vegas. The rest of the country also experienced increases but not to the same extent. In 2006 sales slowed down and prices began to decline -- substantially in some markets. (more)

Polymer electric storage flexible and adaptable

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

The proliferation of solar, wind and even tidal electric generation and the rapid emergence of hybrid electric automobiles demands flexible and reliable methods of high-capacity electrical storage. Now a team of Penn State materials scientists is developing ferroelectric polymer-based capacitors that can deliver power more rapidly and are much lighter than conventional batteries.

Pesticide buildup could lead to poor honey bee health

Monday, August 18, 2008

Honey bees industriously bring pollen and nectar to the hive, but along with the bounty comes a wide variety of pesticides, according to Penn State researchers. Add the outside assault to the pesticides already in the waxy structure of the hive, and bee researchers see a problem difficult to evaluate and correct. However, an innovative approach may mitigate at least some beeswax contamination.
