Chesapeake Bay Watershed
"Helping Farms Help the Bay"

Last Modified: 07/01/2008

Farm in the Chesapeake Bay WatershedThe Chesapeake Bay Watershed is a large ecosystem that encompasses approximately 64,000 square miles in six states and the District of Columbia. Nearly all of Maryland (minus parts of Garrett and Worcester Counties) lies within the watershed. Approximately 28 percent of Maryland’s land is in agriculture, with over 12,000 farms in operation.

NRCS field offices in all 23 Maryland counties and the District of Columbia provide technical and financial cost-share assistance to landowners. These landowners implement conservation practices that help improve the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Three Resource Conservation and Development offices (Easton, Waldorf, and Hagerstown) assist rural communities throughout the state with their conservation efforts.

NRCS, along with its core partners, the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts, provides staff resources to the Chesapeake Bay Program to develop and implement cooperative conservation efforts.
