Biosketch: 
James W. Hanson, M.D., is Director of the Center for Developmental Biology and Perinatal Medicine. Among his activities since joining NICHD in 2001, Dr. Hanson has been involved in the FASTER Trial, the Brain and Tissue Bank , the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers, the Rare Disease Research Centers, the Muscular Dystrophy Research Centers, and the Newborn Screening Research Initiative. Dr. Hanson attended the Johns Hopkins University and received his M.D. from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1969. He received his training in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and subsequently studied birth defects epidemiology as an EIS officer in the USPHS at CDC. After a fellowship in dysmorphology at the University of Washington, he returned to the University of Iowa, becoming Professor of Pediatrics in 1984. From 1977 to 1992, he was Director of the Division of Medical Genetics and became Professor of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health in 1992. In 1991, he was a Kennedy Foundation Fellow with the US Senate, and subsequently served on the staff of the Secretary of DHHS from 1993 to 1997. He is a past President of the Teratology Society and a Founding Board Member of the American College of Medical Genetics.
