Introduction: Safer sex negotiation is key to the prevention of HIV transmission. However, this approach assumes mutual consent, which is not an option for women in abusive relationships. The dynamics of power and control are at the heart of battering and abusive relationships; therefore, battered women are seldom able to protect themselves and face tremendous risk of HIV infection. Methods: An innovative educational campaign coordinated by New England's largest organizations in the areas of HIV/AIDS and Domestic Violence. The prevention effort includes: multicultural, contextual posters widely distributed on mass transit and to community organizations; a brochure directed at women who are concerned about HIV/AIDS and Domestic Violence; and cross-training within the agencies for hotline and program staff. The development of this campaign has been based on active participation from women who are directly affected by these issues and their voices are highlighted within the materials. Conclusions: Though this project is ongoing, the impact of this collaboration is widespread, affecting direct services, educational strategies, and prevention efforts in both the arenas of HIV/AIDS and Domestic Violence. By imparting messages that speak directly to women's lives rather than compartmentalizing their experiences, women's capacity to truly make safer choices will be strengthened.
