Sound research is the foundation upon which effective policies and programs are built. Individuals who develop and implement strategies to improve employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities may obtain information to guide decisions and advance their efforts from the following organizations that conduct research on disability-related topics.
General Disability Research Organizations
The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research
The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) provides leadership and support for research and related activities to maximize the full inclusion, social integration, employment and independent living of individuals with disabilities of all ages.
Interagency Committee on Disability Research
The Interagency Committee on Disability Research (ICDR) promotes coordination and cooperation among the various federal departments and agencies conducting rehabilitation research programs.
National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability/Adult
The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability/Adult (NCWD-A), funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), provides training, technical assistance, policy analysis and information to improve access for all individuals in the workforce development system.
Employment and Disability Institute
The Employment and Disability Institute (EDI),housed within the Industrial and Labor Relations School (ILR) at Cornell University, conducts research and provides continuing education and technical assistance on a range of disability employment issues.
John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development
The John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development, located at the School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is a research and policy organization focused on workforce education and training programs.
Law, Health Policy and Disability Center
The Law, Health Policy and Disability Center, based at the University of Iowa College of Law, conducts research, education, training, technical assistance and outreach on how public policy impacts persons with disabilities, with an emphasis on employment issues.
Disability Research Institute
The Disability Research Institute (DRI) conducts research and evaluations, disseminates information on disability topics and informs policymakers and the public in understanding policies as they relate to people with disabilities and programs under the Social Security Act.
Youth Disability Research Organizations
National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability/Youth
The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability/Youth (NCWD-Y), funded by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), assists state and local workforce development systems to better serve youth with disabilities.
National Center on Secondary Education and Transition
The National Center on Secondary Education and Transition (NCSET) coordinates national resources, offers technical assistance and disseminates information related to secondary education and transition for youth with disabilities.
National Longitudinal Transition Study-2
The National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2) is a ten-year study started in 2001 that explores the experiences and achievements of young people as they transition into early adulthood. It is a follow up to the original NLTS, conducted from 1985 through 1993.
National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities
The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities ( NICHCY ) provides information about disabilities in infants, toddlers, children and youth; laws that impact the education of children and youth with disabilities; and research on effective educational practices.
