Learning Station provides classroom or media-center activities that incorporate primary sources and multi-sensory materials from the Once and Future Web exhibition. The online activities are student-directed explorations while the classroom activities are teacher-guided. Either activities promote students' understanding of the impact of technology development in our society; stimulating their critical thinking and writing abilities; and applying what they have learned with the telegraph and Internet to other technologies.

Online Activities
Experience and enjoy the stories, images, and artifacts in this virtual exhibition with the following online activities. And evaluate historical events and discover the influences of the telegraph and the Internet in society.

  1. The Once & Future National Library of Medicine demonstrates how the Library has taken advantage of new computing and communications technologies revolutionizing the distribution and sharing of the health care information for all people.
  2. Meet the Innovators who played key roles in developing the concepts and technologies behind the telegraph and the Internet, such as Samuel F. B. Morse, J. C. R. Licklider, Leonard Kleinrock, and Larry Roberts.
  3. View the Parallels between the telegraph and Internet, and they may surprise you. See it for yourself whether the use and development of the telegraph mirror those of the Internet.
Classroom Activities
The following activities can be conducted in a classroom (teacher-guided with one computer) or a media center (student-directed with many computers) to help students acquire background information and historical perspectives on today's telecommunication technology. These activities prompt students to think critically and evaluate diverse information sources as they view the multi-media online exhibition, The Once and Future Web.

  1. Comparing the Telegraph and Internet prepares students to compare the telegraph and Internet at the exhibition using their own questions.
  2. Developing Historical Perspectives on Communication Technology helps students connect today's technologies to those of the past.
  3. Using the Telegraph and Internet helps to stimulate questions, which will guide student's exploration of the online exhibition, The Once and Future Web.
