Objectives: To check the quality of anti-infectious drugs available locally used in the treatment of STDs before the setting of a STD program in Myiktyina (Kachin State, Myanmar).METHODS: Twenty patent medicines corresponding to 9 antibiotics were randomly picked out from 5 GPs, 4 drug sellers and in the local hospital and analyzed in the WHO collaborative center on essential durgs (Nantes, France): benzathine benzylypenicillin, benzylpenicillin, ceftriaxone, chlortetracycline, ciprofloxacin, clotrimazole, cotrimoxazole, doxycycline and erythromycin.RESULTS: Thirty-five percent of these drugs came from India, 25% from China and 10% from Myanmar. Fifty percent of the controlled drugs did not contain the expected quantity of active constituent. The lack range from 14 to 48%. One of the drug did not contain the antibiotic expected. Thirty percent of non conform drugs came from China, 20% from India, 10% from Myanmar. Conclusion: Quality of antibiotics (including counterfeit) in low income countries could be poor and need to be controlled before the implementation of any program focusing on infectious disease treatment and prevention.KEYWORDS: Essential drugs; Myanmar; Quality control
