Quality assurance in Lithuanian laboratories detecting HIV antibodies.

Griskevicius A, Milinaviciute R, Caplinskas S; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12; 10: 242 (abstract no. PB0396).

AIDS Centre of Lithuania, Vilnius.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of two HIV-antibody screening assays used in Lithuanian laboratories now. METHODS: Panels of well charactered sera were distributed to laboratories as unknows. The laboratories performed routine tests for HIV by "Peptoscreen-2" and "Rec HIV1/2 3rd gen" ("Abbott") and reported results to the Reference laboratory of Lithuanian AIDS Centre. RESULTS: Of positive sera testing are presented in the table: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. All laboratories obtained true results of testing of negative sera samples. CONCLUSION: The "Peptoscreen-2" was less sensitive than Abbott HIV1/2 3rd gen. Results confirm the poor suitability of "Peptoscreen-2" for donor blood screening for HIV1/2 antibodies. Both test kits have potential use in clinical settings including testing of pools.
