In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike; volunteers waiting to lend support

Affiliates in Houston, Dallas, and Louisiana are assisting first responders to access the damage left by Ike. They continue to help recruit and manage volunteers needed for local shelters and are assisting the Red Cross stage additional shelters throughout the region. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!

Hurricane Ike, now a Tropical Depression, continues to move resulting in heavy rainfall in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. Flood warnings are in effect until late this afternoon. Efforts continue to restore power and ensure the safety of drinking water.

ServiceNation Summit

On September 11-12 the ServiceNation Summit, will convene more than 500 distinguished leaders from American business, government and leading non-profit institutions to celebrate the ideal and power of service, and lay out a bold policy blueprint for addressing America’s greatest social challenges through expanded opportunities for voluntary community and national service. The summit kicks off the Service Nation campaign. ServiceNation will organize a national Day of Action on Sept. 27, to engage tens of thousands of Americans in events across the country that will showcase the power, potential and impact of service. MLK Day of Service 2009 Grants

Through the generous support of the Corporation for National and Community Service, HandsOn Network is pleased to announce the availability of grant awards for MLK Day of Service 2009. In 2009, Affiliates will enthusiastically pursue a commitment to the network-wide celebration of Dr. King’s Day of Service and encourage continued year-long engagement of service in communities. Applications are due October 8th.
