1. SERVICES PERFORMED.

A. TInformation and advisory services to veterans and their dependents regarding benefits, or compensation to which they may be entitled under federal or state laws.

B. Counseling and referral services to veterans and their dependents in matters involving compensation, pension, hospitalization, insurance, out-patient treatment, loans, education and training

C. Applications for the Rhode Island Veterans' Home are processed by and admissions are arranged through this unit.

D. Applications for the Rhode Island Veterans' Cemetery are processed by and arranged through this unit. Telephone: (401) 884-7482.


2. STATE BENEFITS:

A. Tax Exemption: Veterans of wartime service and Gold Star parents are eligible for a $1,000 to $5,000 property tax exemption. Additional exemptions are also available for the blind veterans and disabled veterans requiring "specially adapted housing".

B. State Veterans' Home and Nursing Care Facilities: 339-bed facility with 260 beds for long-term convalescent and skilled nursing care for chronically ill veterans and 79 beds for domiciliary self-care veterans, located at Bristol, Rhode Island.

C. Burial: Eligible veterans at the Rhode Island Veterans' Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island.

D. Veterans Grave Registrations: are maintained upon notification as to his or her death noting place of interment. Historical cemeteries and all burial sites throughout the state are located and marked. Applications for federal headstones and Rhode Island state war markers are processed by this unit.

E. Civil Service Preference: 5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans.

F. Veterans' Bonus: World War II, Korean and Vietnam. Dates expired. Requires eligible veterans to secure legislative approval for payment.

G. Free License Plates: for former Prisoners of War.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:

Rhode Island Veterans Affairs is a division within the Department of Human Services.

Rhode Island Veterans' Cemetery interments are arranged only after a death occurs when:
1. The veteran was honorably discharged.
2. Entered service while a legal resident of Rhode Island or lived in Rhode Island as a legal resident for two (2) continuous years prior to time of death.
3. Last period of service terminated honorably and had a period of active service during wartime.

The mission of Veterans Affairs is to facilitate the coordination of all veterans programs of the state, primarily through professional staff with services to veterans of all wars, their dependents, members of the Armed Forces, other state agencies, veteran organizations, and other interested parties.

Veterans are assisted directly with processing applications to the local VARO for compensation and pension benefits.

The Rhode Island state veteran population is approximately 111,000.
