In both the United Kingdom and the Netherlands quality assurance and postgraduate training for general practice have been developed for some years. AIDS has become a new subject in this field. In an exchange program for GP core training and clinical competence a comparison between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands has been carried out with respect to activities in quality assurance and postgraduate training for HIV and AIDS. The results with respect to similarities and differences between the two countries in aims, contents and organisational structure and their consequences for policy making will be presented and discussed.
