The
Personal Care Shelf
A Service of the
Mower County Red Cross
There are many
people in Mower County that are in need of personal care items
throughout the year due to crisis situations. Unfortunately,
personal care items are not normally available through the food
shelves, but like food, are important parts of our quality of life.
The people we help are referred to the Red Cross by area social
service agencies who work together to provide assistance to those in
need and help them through their crisis situation.
Personal care items are provided to Mower County
residents at no cost in emergency situations. This service is not
designed to provide assistance on a regular basis, but rather as an
emergency service to area residents in need.
Items in the Personal Care Shelf are new, full size
personal hygiene products such as shampoo, deodorant, shavers, etc.
Other household basics including laundry detergent, dish soap,
facial tissue and toilet paper are also distributed. A full
list of inventoried items is below. For

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
One of our youngest volunteers
is Taylor Brown. Taylor is 14 years old and in 9th grade at
Austin High School.
Taylor
started volunteering with us in July 2006 by
participating in a parade. Since then she has been a
regular volunteer for the bloodmobile, working in the
canteen serving snacks and drinks to the donors after
they have donated blood. The other canteen volunteers
love working with Taylor, stating that she is a very
friendly, outgoing person, has lots of energy and is
right there to serve the donors.
Taylor
decided to volunteer because she likes helping people,
and knows that her volunteering is for a good cause.
Her mother Laurie is a volunteer also, and Taylor stated
that her mom is a very caring person and has encouraged
Taylor to volunteer whenever she can.
She is
involved in volleyball and dance at school, and has
volunteered for the Humane Society, Salvation Army and
the YMCA.
Thank
you, Taylor for your continued dedication

emergencies. Many people are touched by American Red Cross
services – all made possible by volunteers who discover that
helping others also makes them feel good about themselves.

Blood is needed by someone every
two seconds. But where does this blood come from? It comes
from volunteer donors like you and me. The requirements are
simple. You must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum
of 110 pounds, be in good general health, and have at least 56
days between whole blood donations.
