Questions for the Universe

What are matter, energy, space, and time? What is the nature of the universe and what is it made of? How did we get here and where are we going?

To discover the basic building blocks and structure of the universe is the great challenge of particle physics. The landmark report titled Quantum Universe describes the quest of particle physicists to explain the universe in terms of nine key questions. In pursuit of answers to these questions, the Office of High Energy Physics supports researchers, experiments, and facilities that hold a promise to revolutionize our understanding of the universe.
