A Link to Services for Older Adults and their Caregivers
Whether you are an older adult yourself, or a caregiver concerned about the well-being and independence of an older adult, The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is ready to help.

AAA's were established under the Older Americans Act (OAA) in 1973 to respond to the needs of Americans aged 60 and over in every local community. The AAA plans, coordinates and offers services that help older adults remain in their home, if that is their preference, aided by services such as Meals-on-Wheels, homemaker assistance and other programs needed to make independent living a viable option. By making a range of options available through contracts with both public and private groups, the AAA makes it possible for older individuals to choose the services and living arrangement that suit them best. In some cases local contractors are not available and the AAA may act as the service provider.

The services available through AAA fall into broad categories:

  • Access Services-such as information and referral, outreach, case management, escort and transportation
  • In-Home Services-which include chore, homemaker, personal care, home-delivered meals, and home repair and rehabilitation
  • Community Services-including senior center, congregate meal, day care, nursing home ombudsman, elder abuse prevention, legal, employment counseling and referral, health promotion, and fitness programs
  • Caregiver Services-such as respite, counseling, and education programs
(Within each category there are a range of programs available.)

Older persons, their caregivers, or anyone concerned about the welfare of an older person can contact their Area Agency on Aging for information and referral to services and benefits in their community. In Mesa County call 970-248-2717 or e-mail aaa@mesacounty.us. A toll free hotline also provides nationwide information about assistance for older individuals whereever they may be in the country. That number is: 1-800-677-1116. (When calling, please provide the older person's address as well as their zip code number.)

ELIGIBILITY
A person must be 60 years of age or older to be eligible for a "program" funded by the "Older Americans Act." Some exceptions are made for eligible spouses and the disabled.

The "Older Americans Act" mandates that emphasis be placed on locating and serving seniors whom are:
  • Minority
  • Frail/Disabled
  • Low Income
  • Residents of Rural Areas

There is no fee charged for services and no one is denied because of an inability to pay for services. Donations are encouraged, and for some "programs" there is a recommended donation rate. Income from donations provides an important source of ongoing funds for the service.
