Job Summary: Job incumbent provides direct clinical services including psychiatric assessment, advanced health evaluations, psychotherapy and medication prescription, primarily in an outpatient setting to Indian Health Beneficiaries at the Tanana Chiefs Conference Counseling Center. Job incumbent uses pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods to meet the needs of individuals, couples, families, and groups across the lifespan.

Essential Functions: Under the direct supervision of the Psychiatrist job incumbent:

1. Provides direct client services primarily in an outpatient setting to children, adolescents, adults and older persons at the Tanana Chiefs Counseling Center and/or Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center.

2. Completes comprehensive/psychiatric mental health assessments, diagnosis, short-term individual, couple, family and group psychotherapy and medication prescription (prescribes legend drugs and controlled substances, within advanced practice of registered nurse’s focus of practice) and monitoring for acute and chronic psychiatric illnesses. Develops treatment plans that sets goals to meet identified mental health needs evaluates responses to intervention, reviews treatment plans and reevaluates as necessary according to applicable regulations.

3. Analyzes multiple sources of data, identifying alternative possibilities to the nature of a mental health care problem, and selects appropriate treatment.

4. Assesses physical condition, and orders various tests (e.g., laboratory, neurological, and psychological) as indicated.

5. Consults with staff and psychiatrists as needed on especially difficult or complicated cases.

6. Provides these services to general mental health population, in addition to emotionally disturbed, severally emotionally disturbed, and chronically mentally ill clients across their lifespan.

7. Communicates, collaborates, and works effectively with clients, families and employees.

8. Provides intake assessments and crisis intervention at the Counseling center. This includes providing coverage one afternoon or morning intake shift weekly which involves taking phone calls and walk-ins for clients requesting services or clients who are in crisis and need immediate mental health care and/or referral.

9. Completes routine charting in a timely manner. This includes dictating mental health assessments, hand writing progress notes the day after client contact, completing quarterly or biannually treatment plans and reviews, and other paperwork as required by federal and state regulations.

Other Responsibilities:

1. Provides consultation on mental health and psychiatric issues to professional and allied health staff to Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center, mental health and medical clinics, and other related agencies.

2. Acquires and applies critical new knowledge and technologies to practice domain. This includes attending trainings appropriate to job duties. Participates in Mental Health Staff Case Conferences and in-service trainings as assigned or needed.

3. Participates in performance improvement activities. This includes quality assurance studies as assigned by supervisor.

4. Attends meetings as assigned.

5. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Masters degree in nursing from an accredited institution with a psychiatric nurse practitioner concentration.

2. Currently licensed nationally and in the state of Alaska as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with MNP (psychiatric/mental health) specialty.

3. Holds current DEA license with the authority to prescribe and dispense legend drugs and schedule 2-5 controlled substances in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

4. A minimum of three years experience with nursing in mental health or psychiatric care with children, adolescents, adults and older persons, individuals, families, couples, group therapy, and with the general mental health population, in addition to emotionally disturbed, severally emotionally disturbed and chronically mentally ill clients across their lifespan.

5. Experience with specialized testing/evaluation, DSMIV diagnosis, treatment planning, treatment coordination and follow-up, crisis intervention, consultation and coordination with medical staff, other agencies and providers, routine charting and professional reports is preferred.

6. Previous clinical experience with cross cultural treatment and village service delivery. Sensitivity to needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian culture.

7. Strong oral, written, analytical and interpersonal skills.

8. Strong computer skills using word-processing software programs.

9. The ability to maintain strict client and employer confidentiality.
