The Alaska OCS Region encompasses 600 million
acres and more than 6,000 miles of coastline. That’s more coastline
than in the entire continental United States. Our Region encompasses
the Arctic oceans, the Bering Sea, and the Northern Pacific ocean. The
shoreline includes Native villages, small fishing villages, and large
cities. The diversity of ecosystems in the Region is astounding. It is
in this environment that the Alaska Region must find a way to provide
the opportunity to explore for petroleum and still preserve the
environment and the lifestyle of the people living adjacent to its
coast. |
