      Johnson Space Center
Effective since: Sunday, September 21, 2008 6:08 PM CDT

The NASA Johnson Space Center will re-open Tomorrow, Monday, September 22nd. Employees should report to their supervisor and proceed to their normal work area unless directed otherwise. Supervisors should work with their building facility manager to identify areas that may not be ready for occupancy by their residents.

    FIRST DAY BACK:
The most important thing to remember is to drive defensively. Many drivers are not slowing or stopping at non-working traffic lights. Drive slowly and treat all intersections with non-functioning or red flashing traffic lights like a 4-way stop. Be prepared for debris on the roads. Not all traffic lights are operating consistently and many traffic signs have been damaged in the storm.

At work, organizations will set up team meetings with employees. Consult your facility manager in case of office or building issues. Do not call Center Operations for work orders or issues with air conditioning, etc. Buildings will continue to be returned to normal conditions over the next few weeks.

VPN SYSTEM: The JSC VPN system is operational and available for use by users who need to access the JSC network from remote locations. Here are some important points:
    • All civil servant and contractor employees with a JSC Domain account are now enabled to use the JSC VPN system to access JSC.
    • The JSC VPN system has been expanded to handle more users.
    • If users have not previously installed the JSC VPN on their remote computer, the installation instructions have been posted on the NASA Portal so that they can be accessed from the Internet. The link to the instructions is: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/news/vpn_intro.html (Note: Existing JSC VPN users do not need to reinstall the JSC VPN client and can continue to use it as before.)
    • The September 30th deadline to have an RSA token to use the JSC VPN system has been temporarily delayed. It was felt that the most important thing was to get users access to JSC and did not want the RSA Token requirement to be an issue. The RSA Token requirement will be implemented at a later date.

HOW TO GET HELP AND HOW TO VOLUNTEER: If you have a need or can assist other JSC Team members (such as help cleaning up, for a generator or chainsaw, for a guest room) please contact 281-483-5411 between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

RECHARGE AND REFRESH (R&R) STATION AT THE GILRUTH: The R&R Station in the Gilruth Recreation Center opens at 7:00 am for badged JSC Team members (civil servants and contractors) and their families who do not have power and/or potable water. People have been asking how to make donations in support of team members who had substantial losses. Checks made out to the JSC Exchange will be accepted at the Gilruth. Employees continue to donate baby food, canned food and other items to distribute to employees without power or those in need.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP): If you would like to speak to someone from the EAP, you may call 281-483-6130 (leave a message; they will return your call).

SCHOOLS / LOCAL DAY CARE CENTERS REMAIN CLOSED: Many of the area schools and day care centers remain closed. We want to grant as much flexibility as possible to all employees who must attend to their children during this time. Contractors should follow their company policies. Civil Service supervisors may grant up to 16 hours of excused leave for situations such lack of power, house damage, or inability to find child care. After that time, civil service should use other flexibilities. The Center is in a liberal leave status and with supervisory approval, employees may take their annual, credit, comp, etc. We also encourage the use of telework if the job is conducive to working from home. Please work with your supervisor.

CHILDREN AT WORK: Supervisors should use their own judgment regarding employees bringing children in for short or sporadic periods, taking into account safety issues and work activities.

CHILD CARE AND TELEWORK: Normally, our telework policy for civil service employees prevents simultaneous teleworking and child care; however, until schools are back in session, supervisors may temporarily approve these work arrangements as appropriate. GILRUTH FITNESS CENTER: Beginning Monday, the Gilruth fitness facility will be open for normal operations from 7 am to 7 pm. The long and short jogging trails are closed until further notice.

STARPORT CAFES AND VENDING:, Normal operations will begin on Monday for Building 3 and 11 cafes. Building 1 and 4 snack bars and all vending machines will start operations later in the week.

FIRE ALARMS: Due to fluctuations in power and sensors, there are likely to be several building fire alarms that trigger next week. Please treat every fire alarm seriously and evacuate your building to your pre-designated location. Once out of the building, report to your organization's fire warden.

CASUAL ATTIRE: Employees are encouraged to dress casually this week as we get the center back to normal operation. Wear closed toed, low heel footwear. There is still some minor debris in various walkways around site.

    JSC CLINIC:
The JSC Clinic at Building 8 is open 8 AM to 5 PM for urgent care issues through Friday 9/26. After that the clinic will revert to a Monday through Friday schedule. It is not open for regular physicals. The clinic phone number is: 281-483-4111. You are reminded that for Emergencies dial: 33333 at JSC & 911 at Ellington temporarily).
