The Center supports highly-rated, peer-reviewed proposals to promote and conductundersea research and technological innovation. The Center primarily supports undersea research in areas off the West Coast of the United States, including the Bering and Beaufort Seas, the northeastern Pacific Ocean, and waters off Washington, Oregon, and California. Proposals are also welcome for undersea research and innovation in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Projects selected by the Center support NOAA’s mission by addressing the regional programmatic themes of the Center.  We emphasize in situ research requiring actual or virtual presence of the scientist, using SCUBA (including NITROX) techniques; manned, remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles; underwater imaging systems; and other undersea sensors.  The Center is currently increasing its focus on development of both new technologies and novel adaptations and applications of existing technologies.
