Bering Sea Habitats

The Southeastern Bering Sea can be divided into seven physically and biologically distinct domains or habitats. These include the middle shelf domain (2a & 2b, 50 - 100m isobaths), the outer shelf (1a, 1b , 100 - 200m isobaths), the continental slope ( 5, >200m isobath), the Pribilof Islands (3), and Unimak Island (4). Biological and physical characteristics such as temperature, mixing, currents, and timing of the spring bloom differ among regions, and these differences influence the hatching time, growth, and survival of marine organisms.
